Melatonin is a hormone that occurs naturally in the human body. It is synthesized in the pineal gland — part of the endocrine system — and is a derivative of tryptophan. Darkness enhances melatonin secretion, while light inhibits it. Peak production occurs between 2 and 4 AM. Production decreases with age, especially after the age of 40, so external supplementation may be beneficial.
