Folic acid is an organic chemical compound classified as a water-soluble B vitamin. It is a substance that is also often referred to as vitamin B9. After ingestion, with the help of specific enzymes, folic acid is converted to the active form of the vitamin, which is 5-methyltetrahydrofolate (5-MTHF), allowing the compound to perform its proper functions in the body.

Folic acid was first isolated from spinach leaves, but sources of the compound include various dark green vegetables, such as kale, Brussels sprouts and parsley, as well as dry pulses, grain products and offal. The compound can also be supplied to the body with dietary supplements.
