African black bean (Griffonia simplicifolia) is a plant from the Fabaceae family, native to the tropical regions of West and Central Africa. It is an evergreen shrub that can grow up to 3 meters in height. Its flowers form clusters, and the fruit appears as oblique cylindrical pods. The seeds contain a valuable compound – 5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP), an organic chemical classified as an amino acid.
